Sermon Titbits

This teaching on discipleship is based on how we can successfully live our lives for God (Eccl. 12: 13). Living for God means we have to be His disciples, that is, followers of His ways. We have to be disciplined in order to be successful disciples of Jesus and one of the definitions of discipline is "bring under control by training in obedience".     This means that discipline is unnatural to us. It has to be enforced by theoretical instruction & practical training.  It is through the instructions we receive from God’s word and the experiences of life that He takes us through that we learn the lessons of discipleship.

We have been focusing on how we can successfully live our lives for God. We have said before that living for God requires us to surrender our will to His will and allowing Him to be the center pole of our lives. It means allowing Him to be the Captain of our ship and the pilot of our plane. This is what discipleship is about. A disciple is a follower of a leader, teacher or master. We are disciples of Jesus Christ. Discipleship comes from the word discipline, so a disciple should have the discipline of the master. One of the definitions of discipline is "bring under control by training in obedience".

Without any doubt, the greatest thing in all of life is to live our lives for God. The Bible says "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil”. (Ecclesiastes 12: 13 – 14 NKJV). How then can we live our lives for God? The following steps can help us to accomplish this.

: Jesus declared “I am the light of the world”. Naturally speaking, Jesus did not qualify to call Himself the light of the world because of His humanity but He was so bold to call Himself the Light of the world, the Bread of life and the Way, the Truth and the Life. Jesus was bold to declare His identity because He knew who He was and so must we. We must be bold about who we are otherwise the world will make us what we are not. In Matt. 5:14, Jesus said to his disciples "ye are the light of the world". He has left us in the world to shine His light. As Christians, God has called us to do the following.

Grace means the free and unmerited favor of God as it's shown in the salvation of man (Romans 5:8; Titus 3:5-7). Grace is free. It is kindness from God that we do not deserve (Eph. 2:1-6). Knowing Jesus is a supernatural experience. We are divinely chosen or selected by God to know Him and also to have eternal life we don't merit. Grace is divine assistance for regeneration and sanctification. The grace of God allows us to come into God's presence without any assistance. By grace are we saved through faith. It is the gift of God and not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph. 2: 8-9).

We have the free will to choose between good and bad and between right and wrong.

Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude, especially to God. It is the act of giving thanks, grateful acknowledgement of benefits or favors, especially to God. Only God is reliable and dependable. He is the unchangeable changer and the unmovable mover. He is the mountain mover and the one who opens doors. We must always remember to give thanks because this is the will of God for all of us (I Thess. 5:18). It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and to sing thy praise O Most High (Psalm 92: 1). Even in times of tragedy, we should give thanks to God for what remains because He is the reason why we have not lost everything. When there is life, there is hope. It is of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness (Lam. 3:22). Our God is everything to us. He is Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Shammah, Jehovah Jireh, and Jehovah Rohi. He supplies our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

One of the most challenging things for us as believers is knowing the mind of God in a particular situation. As this year gradually rolls to its end and as we wait with anticipation to receive the new year, I believe this is the right time to begin to ask God for His plans for us. You do not want to wait until the new year before you begin to ask God for what He wants to do with your life. When we fail to plan, then we are planning to fail. Many believers have said they don't know how to hear from God. In order for us to succeed in our walk with God we must train our ears to hear from God and distinguish His voice from every other voice we hear.

For the past couple of weeks, we have been discussing the topic of overflow because that is God's word for JHES in 2013. I believe many of us already have a testimony of overflow and peradventure, you have not, there is still a lot that God can do before the end of the year. Previously, we discussed how God used five loaves of bread and two fishes to feed the multitude and there were still 12 baskets full of overflow. After that, I taught on the principle that obedience precedes the overflow and I used the first public miracle of Jesus to explain the principle. Although obedience is a major key to receiving an overflow, there are other factors that can also contribute to it. These points are based on our Bible Study on the Theme - The Lord is my Shepherd.

God made man in His image and likeness. The plan of God for us is to rule in dominion, to subdue the earth and to overcome. This is confirmed in Gen. 1: 26 – 28 which says And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”.
